In my recent paintings and animations, intentionally naïve, klunky shapes contrast with bright hues of pinks, yellows, olive greens, grays and reds. Clouds shaped like T-bone steaks and Idaho potatoes, fairy tale characters and fat viruses, cavort in a dreamlike painterly environment. The dissonance between joy and excitement, angst and loneliness, pervades the images. Flatness and indifference to perspective informs the work; a freshness and glow arise from layering, scumbling and juxtaposition of color. The formal aesthetic elements are as important as the message.
The work explores issues of global pandemic, gun violence, bigotry, war, environmental destruction, and solitude while simultaneously portraying the humor, ridiculousness, and child-like beauty of human existence.
My 4”x6” landscapes, “Postcards from the Road” are all done from photos I’ve taken of places where I have traveled. The images are scenes which every driver might encounter rather than the usual tourist sights found on commercial postcards.
